At one time the Buddha was staying in the land of the Magadhans near the brahmin village of Pañcasālā. Now at that time in Pañcasālā the young maidens were occupied with guests. Then the Buddha robed up in the morning and, taking his bowl and robe, entered Pañcasālā for alms. Now at that time Māra had possessed the brahmins and householders of Pañcasālā, so that they thought, “Don’t let the ascetic Gotama get any alms!” Then the Buddha left the village with his bowl as clean-washed as it was whe
あるとき、世尊はマガダ国のパンチャサーラーというバラモンの村の近くに滞在しておられた。そのころ、パンチャサーラーでは若き乙女たちが来客の接待に忙しくしていた。
やがて世尊は、朝になって衣を整え、鉢と衣を携えて、托鉢のためにパンチャサーラーの村へと入られた。ところがそのとき、悪魔マーラがパンチャサーラーのバラモンたちや在家の者たちに憑依し、彼らの心に「沙門ゴータマには何も布施してはならぬ」という思いを起こさせていた。
かくして世尊は、村に入られたときと同じく、何も入れられることのない清らかな鉢を携えたまま、村をあとにされた。
