At Sāvatthī. Now at that time a big sacrifice had been set up for King Pasenadi of Kosala. Bulls, bullocks, heifers, goats and rams—five hundred of each—had been led to the pillar for the sacrifice. His bondservants, servants, and workers did their jobs under threat of punishment and danger, weeping with tearful faces. Then several mendicants robed up in the morning and, taking their bowls and robes, entered Sāvatthī for alms. Then, after the meal, when they returned from almsround, they went up
サーヴァッティーにおける出来事である。その頃、コーサラ国のパセーナディ王のために、大いなる祭祀が営まれようとしていた。雄牛、若牛、雌牛、山羊、羊——それぞれ五百頭が、祭祀の柱へと引き立てられていた。王の隷属民、下僕、労働者たちは、罰せられることへの恐れと危険の中で職務に従事し、涙に濡れた顔で泣き続けていた。そこで幾人かの比丘たちが、朝に衣を整え、鉢と衣をたずさえてサーヴァッティーへと托鉢に入った。そして食後、托鉢より戻った彼らは、［世尊のもとへと］まかり出た。
