At Sāvatthī. Seated to one side, King Pasenadi said to the Buddha, “Sir, for someone who has been reborn, is there any exemption from old age and death?” “Great king, for someone who has been reborn, there’s no exemption from old age and death. Even for well-to-do aristocrats, brahmins, or householders—rich, affluent, and wealthy, with lots of gold and silver, lots of property and assets, and lots of money and grain—when they’re born, there’s no exemption from old age and death. 舎衛城にて。パセーナディ王は傍らに座し、世尊に申し上げた。「尊師よ、生を受けた者に、老いと死を免れる道はございましょうか」と。「大王よ、生を受けた者に、老いと死を免れる道はない。たとえ裕福な刹帝利であれ、婆羅門であれ、居士であれ——金銀豊かに財宝蓄え、穀倉満ちて富み栄えたる者であれども——生を受けた以上、老いと死を免れることはできない。いわんや、比丘たちであっても——」
