At Sāvatthī. Then Venerable Ānanda went up to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him, “Ānanda, do you endorse Sāriputta?” Suppose that in the autumn the heavens were clear and cloudless. At the crack of dawn, the Morning Star shines and glows and radiates. サーヴァッティーにおいてのことである。時に、尊者アーナンダは世尊のもとに参じ、礼拝して一傍らに坐した。世尊はアーナンダに告げられた。「アーナンダよ、汝はサーリプッタを認めるか」と。
譬えば、秋天晴れ渡り、雲ひとつなき折、夜明けの暁に、明けの明星が輝き、煌めき、光を放つごとく、スシーマの集いに連なる天子たちもまた、さまざまの鮮やかな色彩を顕現して光り輝いた。
さらに譬えば、秋天晴れ渡り、雲ひとつなき折、日輪が創穹に昇りゆくにつれ、あまねく一切の闇を払い除けて……
