1. Service Overview & AI Disclosure

AI Buddha Zen ("the App") is an AI-powered chat application that provides responses based on Buddhist scriptures. The App draws from a curated database of over 10,000 Buddhist scripture verses (gāthā) from the Pali Canon and Mahayana sutras.

AI Disclosure: All responses in this App are generated by artificial intelligence (AI). You are interacting with an AI system, not a human being. AI-generated responses may contain errors, inaccuracies, hallucinations, or misinterpretations of Buddhist teachings. The AI does not have consciousness, understanding, or personal experience of Buddhist practice.

2. Acceptance of Terms & Eligibility

2.1 Agreement

By using the App, you agree to these Terms of Use and Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the App.

2.2 Age Restrictions

You must be at least 13 years old to use this App. If you are between 13 and 17 years old, you must have the consent of a parent or legal guardian. The mood tracking and emotional wellness features require users to be at least 16 years old. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we learn that a user under 13 has provided personal information, we will promptly delete such data.

3. Important Disclaimers

3.1 Not Medical or Mental Health Services

This App is NOT a medical device, therapy service, mental health treatment, crisis intervention tool, or clinical decision support system. It does not diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease or medical condition. Do not use this App as a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. If you are currently receiving treatment from a healthcare provider, do not discontinue medications or treatment without consulting your provider.

3.2 Not Religious Authority

AI Buddha Zen is an AI-powered educational and wellness tool. It is NOT an ordained monk, temple, religious organization, or authorized representative of any Buddhist tradition or sect. AI-generated interpretations of Buddhist scriptures may differ from official doctrinal positions of specific Buddhist traditions, as scripture interpretation varies widely across denominations. This App does not and cannot perform religious rites, ceremonies, or serve as a substitute for Buddhist practice or guidance from a qualified teacher.

3.3 Not Professional Advice

The App does not provide and is not a substitute for professional legal, financial, career, or relationship advice. Always consult a qualified professional for important life decisions.

3.4 Automated Safety Features — Limitations

The App includes automated risk detection features (such as C-SSRS-informed screening) that attempt to identify messages indicating crisis situations. These features are supplementary screening tools only. They do not guarantee detection of all risk signals, may produce false positives or false negatives, and cannot replace human professional assessment. The existence of these features does not mean the App provides mental health services.

4. AI-Generated Content & Limitations

4.1 Accuracy Not Guaranteed

The App uses AI to generate responses. You should not rely on factual assertions in AI-generated responses without independently verifying them. Even responses that appear detailed, specific, or cite specific scripture references may contain significant inaccuracies. The AI may generate plausible-sounding but incorrect information ("hallucinations").

4.2 Information May Not Be Current or Complete

The AI does not have access to real-time or comprehensive information. Responses are based on training data and the scripture database, which may not reflect the most current scholarship or complete Buddhist canonical texts.

4.3 Scripture Citations

While the App employs a RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) system with confidence scoring to improve citation accuracy, AI-generated scripture references should be verified against authoritative sources. Citation confidence levels (direct quote, aligned, interpretive, reference) indicate the AI's assessment, not a guarantee of accuracy.

5. Use of Third-Party AI Services

5.1 Anthropic Claude AI

The App uses Anthropic PBC's Claude AI (headquartered in San Francisco, USA) to generate responses. When you send a message or photo:

5.2 Anthropic's Data Handling

Under our commercial API agreement, Anthropic does not use your data for AI model training. API data is retained by Anthropic for up to 30 days for safety monitoring and abuse prevention, after which it is deleted. For complete details, see Anthropic's Privacy Policy.

We do not sell, rent, or share your personal data with any parties other than Anthropic for response generation. We do not use your data for advertising or tracking purposes.

By using this App, you acknowledge that your interactions may reveal information about your religious or philosophical beliefs and mental or emotional state. Under Japan's Act on the Protection of Personal Information (APPI) and the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), such data may constitute "special care-required personal information" or "special categories of personal data." We process this data based on your explicit consent, provided by your continued use of the App after reviewing this notice.

Anthropic PBC (United States) is the only third party with whom we share user data. Your messages and images are transmitted to Anthropic's API for AI response generation.

8.5 Cross-Border Data Transfer

Your messages are transmitted to Anthropic PBC (United States) for AI processing. The United States does not have an adequacy determination under Japan's APPI or the EU GDPR. By using this App, you explicitly consent to this cross-border transfer. You may withdraw this consent at any time by ceasing to use the App and requesting deletion of your data.

Upon deletion, all conversation history, photos, profile data, mood records, and usage records associated with your identifier will be permanently and irreversibly removed from our servers. Anonymized aggregate statistics (which cannot be linked back to you) will be retained.

To revoke your consent to data collection and processing, stop using the App and request deletion of your data using any of the methods above. Consent withdrawal does not affect the lawfulness of processing performed before the withdrawal.

All data is transmitted over HTTPS/TLS. Server-side data is protected by standard security measures. Safety audit records use SHA-256 cryptographic hashing (CAP-SRP system). Note: SHA-256 hashing constitutes pseudonymization, not anonymization — hashed data remains personal data under GDPR and APPI.

8.10 AI Training

Your conversation data is NOT used to train AI models. Anthropic's commercial API terms prohibit use of API customer data for model training. We do not independently train AI models on user data.

8.11 Children's Privacy

This App is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we learn that we have collected data from a child under 13, we will promptly delete it.

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by posting the updated policy on this page with a new "Last Updated" date. Your continued use of the App after changes constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.

Pali Canon scripture data is sourced from SuttaCentral under CC0 (Public Domain) license. English translations are by Bhikkhu Sujato (suttas) and Bhikkhu Brahmali (Vinaya). The App's design, code, scripture database curation, AI prompt engineering, and CAP-SRP system are the intellectual property of VeritasChain Co., Ltd. You are granted a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to use the App for personal, non-commercial purposes.

10. Limitation of Liability & Warranty Disclaimer

10.1 "As Is" Provision

THE APP IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE" WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, OR NON-INFRINGEMENT.

10.2 Limitation of Damages

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, our total liability for any claims arising from or related to the App shall not exceed the amount you paid to us in the twelve (12) months preceding the claim, or JPY 5,000 (approximately USD 35), whichever is greater. We shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages.

10.3 Japan Consumer Contract Act

Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits our liability for damages caused by our intentional act or gross negligence, as such exclusion would be void under Japan's Consumer Contract Act (消費者契約法).

10.4 Apple-Specific Terms

This agreement is between you and VeritasChain Co., Ltd., not Apple. Apple has no obligation to provide maintenance or support for the App. In the event of any failure of the App to conform to applicable warranties, you may notify Apple for a refund of the purchase price (if any); Apple has no other warranty obligation. Apple is not responsible for any third-party claims related to the App. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of this agreement.

11. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless VeritasChain Co., Ltd. from any claims, losses, or damages arising from: (a) your violation of these Terms, (b) your misuse of the App, (c) your reliance on AI-generated content for important decisions, or (d) your provision of the App's content to third parties as authoritative religious or medical guidance.

12. Service Modification & Termination

We reserve the right to modify, suspend, or discontinue the App (in whole or in part) at any time, with or without notice. We will make reasonable efforts to provide advance notice for significant changes. We may terminate your access if you violate these Terms. Force majeure events (including but not limited to earthquakes, typhoons, pandemics, server failures, and third-party API service disruptions) may result in service interruption, for which we shall not be liable.

We may update these Terms from time to time. We will provide at least 14 days' notice before material changes take effect, via the App or our website. Continued use of the App after the effective date of changes constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms. If you do not agree to the updated Terms, please discontinue use of the App.

14. Governing Law & Dispute Resolution

These Terms are governed by the laws of Japan. Any disputes shall be submitted to the Tokyo District Court as the court of first instance. This does not affect any mandatory consumer protection rights you may have under the laws of your country of residence.
